She felt a quiver in her belly. The feeling grew, and Emaneilia knew what was happening. Her power was revealing itself. She was the first of the Fae princesses to get her ability. She closed her eyes and tried to remember what her mother told her.

Emaneilia wasn't afraid as she opened her eyes and looked around her. She was in a snow-covered field surrounded by strange-looking beings who seemed as shocked to see her as she was to see them. One of them moved towards her. A woman with dark hair and blue eyes. She spoke softly, “Don’t be afraid. We mean you no harm. I am Kira, and these are my friends. What is your name?”

The girl met Kira’s eyes and spoke softly, “Emaneillia.” Kira smiled as understanding came to her. Emaneillia could travel through time to the future and back to what was her present, and according to the Fae queen, young Emaneillia took her first jaunt through time as a child. “Where am I?”

“I think you have just jumped into the future.”

Emaneillia smiled, “My mother said that the first time might be scary for me. She said I wouldn’t know what was happening but should be brave.”

“Your mother is brilliant,” Kira said, standing. “Would you like to meet my friends?” The child nodded. Kira quickly introduced everyone to Emaneillia. “You are the reason we are all together,” Kira added, smiling at a still wide-eyed Emaneillia.

“What do you mean?” Emaenillia asked Kira.

“I don’t have all the details, but you will visit the future often to bring us together here.”

“I will?”

Keelan stepped forward, “Yes. It is because of you that we will have a future. Your actions have given us hope, even if we don’t understand everything.”

Kira held Emaneillia’s hand. “We believe in you and what you have done, or I should say what you will do.”

“We should return to the kingdom,” Noko said quietly.

“I know you,” Emaneillia said, moving through the deep snow and tugging Kira with her to stand before Noko. “You are training to be a guard of the Fae.” Noko had completed his training long ago. He bowed deeply, showing his respect for the Fae princess.

Just beyond the trees lining the snow-covered meadow, a twig snapped. Kira turned to raise her head in the direction of the sound. She pushed Emaneillia behind her between her body and Noko's, turning to face the direction where the sound had originated. Within seconds a group moved into the opening, all dressed in black and carrying weapons. Ketin was among them, but he looked different. He was bigger, not as big as his brother Tic, but close, and his hair was longer and darker than before; his skin even looked darker.

A thin, petite female with jet-black hair stood beside him. Kira wasn’t sure how she knew it, but the female was Tamaneillia, who appeared shrouded in darkness. Kira felt Emaneillia poke her head out from behind her to see what was happening. Within a split second, the dark female raised her hand and threw a blade in their direction. Kira heard Keelan’s voice as he shrieked. “No!”

Keelan didn’t realize that it was his voice as the blade landed. The older version of Emaneillia appeared before Kira and the child, taking the weapon to the chest. Then she fell backward, knocking Kira, the child, and Noko down. An explosion of light blinded them all, and when it faded, Kira and the young and older Emaneillia were gone.

Some would think that was when the Fae war started, but it began hundreds of years before when Emaneilia returned home from her first jump to the future. It was a war between sisters. One uses her foresight, fighting to save the earth. The other combating her sister to let fate decide the outcome of the world.
