The urgency of her mother’s voice woke her. Kyla sat up, easing out of her bed. She could see the light under the door. Her mother wasn’t in the room, but Kyla did what she had been told to do, quickly and quietly. Making the bed, just as Kyla entered the adjoining bathroom, she heard two loud popping noises. She froze in place as her mother screamed, “NO!” Again, Kyla listened to her mother’s voice in her head, “Hide baby, and don’t come out!” This time, her mother sounded more frantic.

Kyla prays to be invisible and escapes detection. The men leave, taking her mother with them. When it's quiet, she comes out to find that her father is dead. Fear for her mother’s safety, Kyla intends to go to the one person she feels can protect her and help her get her mother back, her uncle. When she gets to his home, she learns that he is the reason for the chaos that killed her father and has left her alone.

After spending the night running and hiding, Kyla follows the clues left in a storage facility to find a man named Arthur who can keep her safe. Her quest to find him leads her on a journey of self-discovery where she will learn who she is, where she comes from, and why she is so important.
